Russian Manicure in Phuket: E-File Technique Explained

A Russian manicure is a dry manicure in which the cuticle is lifted and removed with an electric file (e-file), often finished with nippers — the combined technique — and the coating is applied as close to the cuticle as possible, so the nails look clean and grow out neatly. In Bang Tao, Phuket, ERA’s Thai masters are trained in Russian manicure techniques to ERA standards, and a Russian-speaking curator works on the floor every day from 10:00 to 21:00. Manicure no polish costs ฿800 (about 1 hour) and Manicure with gel strengthening PRIME ฿1,500 (about 2 hours), both with a 10-day guarantee.

What is a Russian manicure?

The name comes from the countries where the technique became the everyday standard for gel coatings: Russia and its neighbours. Three things define it.

  • Dry work. The hands are not soaked. On dry skin the master sees exactly where living skin ends and the cuticle begins, and a nail plate that has not absorbed water holds the coating better.
  • E-file cuticle work. Small rotating bits lift the cuticle, remove the thin layer of dead skin on the nail plate (the true cuticle) and clean the side walls. In the combined technique, the master finishes with nippers for a perfectly clean line.
  • Coating close to the cuticle. Gel goes on in a thin, even layer right up to the cuticle line, with no visible gap. As the nail grows, the regrowth looks tidy for longer.

How it compares with other techniques you may see on menus:

Technique Cuticle work Typical time Best for
Russian e-file manicure Dry, e-file bits only 1.5–2.5 h with coating A clean cuticle line and long-wear gel
Combined Russian manicure Dry, e-file, then nippers 1.5–2.5 h with coating Dense or fast-growing cuticles
Classic wet manicure Soaking, pushing back, nippers 45–90 min A quick tidy-up and regular polish
File-only (no-cut) manicure Cuticle pushed back, nothing cut 1–1.5 h Thin, sensitive skin
Japanese manicure Nail care with pastes and powders 45–60 min A natural look or a break between coatings

Times are typical industry ranges; ERA’s own durations are listed below. Which technique suits your nails is a question for the master and the curator: very thin nails or sensitive skin need a gentler approach.

Pros and cons of a Russian manicure

Pros

  • a very clean, precise cuticle line;
  • coating close to the cuticle, so regrowth is less visible and the manicure looks fresh for longer;
  • reliable adhesion of gel to a dry, well-prepared nail;
  • with regular visits, fewer hangnails and tidier cuticles.

Cons

  • it takes longer than a basic manicure;
  • the result depends entirely on the master’s hand: careless e-file work can thin the nail plate, leave grooves, overheat the nail or injure the skin;
  • very thin or damaged nails and sensitive skin need an adapted, gentler approach;
  • it costs more than a quick file-and-polish.

The rule of thumb: a good Russian manicure should never hurt and never bleed. If it does, say so straight away.

How long it takes — and how long it lasts in Phuket

Time in the chair. With coating, a Russian manicure usually takes 1.5–2.5 hours. At ERA, Manicure no polish takes about 60 minutes, Manicure with polish 1 hour 45 minutes and Manicure with gel strengthening PRIME about 2 hours. Need hands and feet in one visit? Four hands with covering — two masters at once — takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.

Wear time. A quality coating can last until the next removal; one ERA guest’s manicure lasted 15 weeks, which is an exception, not a promise. In the tropics we recommend refreshing every 2–3 weeks: salt, sun and chlorine dry out the cuticle area, and regular visits keep both the coating and the natural nail in good condition.

To make it last: apply cuticle oil daily, rinse your hands with fresh water after the sea, wear gloves for cleaning, and book a repair instead of picking at a lifted corner. For a full breakdown of nail prices and what affects them, see manicure prices in Phuket.

Hygiene and sterilisation: what to check

An e-file and nippers work right at the skin, so hygiene is not a detail:

  • metal instruments and e-file bits should go through full sterilisation between guests — a wipe or a quick spray is disinfection at best, not sterilisation;
  • the workstation should be clean and prepared before your service starts;
  • files and buffers, which cannot be sterilised, should be fresh for each guest;
  • a precise master does not cut living skin.

ERA’s standard is full sterilisation of instruments before every guest.

How ERA’s Thai masters work with Russian techniques

ERA’s nail team is Thai, trained to ERA standards — including Russian manicure techniques. There are three master levels. ONE masters have completed ERA’s foundation training, a service standards module plus a technical specialisation, and work under mentor supervision; PRO is the next step; PRIME is the expert and mentor level.

A Russian-speaking curator always works on the floor. They translate your request for the master — shape, length, how close to the cuticle, the shade — and control the process. In Google reviews (4.6 from 53, October 2026), guests mention the French manicure and the Russian-speaking support. More about how the curator model works: Russian-speaking salon in Phuket.
