How to Protect Hair from Sun and Salt Water in Phuket

Hair turns dry and straw-like in Phuket because UV light, salt water, chlorinated pools and constant humidity work on it at the same time: the cuticle lifts and the hair loses the lipids that keep it smooth. A simple routine prevents most of the damage — fresh water and a leave-in conditioner before swimming, a hat in the midday sun, a rinse and conditioner after every swim — and a professional treatment helps when home care is no longer enough. At ERA in Bang Tao, Deep Hydration & Nutrition and Care For Curly Hair cost ฿1,000 each and take about 30 minutes.

Why hair feels like straw after the sea: four causes

  • UV light. Strong tropical sun breaks down keratin and the hair’s natural pigment. Hair loses its shine, dark hair turns reddish, blonde turns brassy and dyed colour fades faster.
  • Salt water. As sea water evaporates, the salt stays on the hair and draws moisture out of it. Add sand and wind, and the cuticle turns rough.
  • Chlorine. Pool water strips away the natural oils that protect the hair. Light and bleached hair can also pick up a greenish tint from copper in pool water.
  • Humidity. Hair absorbs moisture from the air and swells, then dries out in the sun or under air-conditioning. Repeated every day, this wears out the cuticle and causes frizz — especially in curly and coloured hair.

The result is the same in every case: a lifted cuticle. Hair feels rough, tangles easily, splits at the ends and stops reflecting light.

How to protect hair from sun and salt water: a daily routine

Before you swim

  1. Wet your hair with fresh water. Hair that is already saturated absorbs less salt and chlorine.
  2. Apply a leave-in conditioner or a few drops of hair oil to the lengths and ends.
  3. Tie long hair in a loose braid or bun to reduce tangling. In the midday sun, wear a hat: sprays with UV filters help, but they do not replace shade.

After you swim

  1. Rinse with fresh water as soon as you can — do not let salt dry on your hair in the sun.
  2. Wash gently: a mild, sulphate-free shampoo, conditioner every time you shampoo, and a mask once or twice a week.
  3. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is still in, starting from the ends.
  4. Dry in the shade or with cool air, and keep hot tools on a low setting.

Do you need to shampoo after every swim? Not necessarily. Rinse with fresh water after every swim, but shampoo once a day — or whenever sunscreen and oil build up — and always follow with conditioner. Over-washing dries hair out as much as salt does.

What to avoid on a beach holiday

  • Letting salt water dry on your hair in direct sun.
  • Using strong clarifying shampoos every day.
  • Rubbing hair with a towel — press the water out instead.
  • Tight elastics on wet hair: strands break where they are weakest.
  • Brushing wet hair with a dense brush.
  • Lightening your hair right before a beach week, or swimming the day after colouring: fresh colour needs 48–72 hours.

Blonde and coloured hair: extra rules

Does salt water ruin dyed hair? Not in one swim — but sun, salt and chlorine together make colour fade and turn brassy much faster.

  • Use a colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo. A purple shampoo once a week neutralises yellow tones; used more often, it can dry the hair.
  • In the pool, always wet your hair and apply a leave-in first. For platinum blonde, a swim cap is the safest option.
  • If you are planning colour in Phuket, tell the colourist how much sun, sea and pool time lies ahead: it affects the shade and the care plan.
  • Can you colour hair after the sea? Usually yes, but very dry, porous hair takes colour unevenly, and a colourist may suggest a hydration treatment first.

At ERA, colourist-curators from Russia with experience in complex colour techniques joined the team in October 2026. Women’s colouring costs from ฿3,500; the final price depends on hair length and technique.

When to book a professional treatment

Home care is usually enough for a short trip. Book a salon treatment when:

  • hair still feels rough after a week or two of conditioner and masks;
  • it tangles every time you wash it;
  • your colour has faded within days;
  • curls have lost their definition and frizz whatever you apply.

Hair loss on holiday: what salon care can and cannot do

Many people notice more hair on the brush after a move or a long trip, and sun, sweat and chlorine add stress to the scalp. Salon rituals — including Kydra anti hair-loss care for men at ERA — are cosmetic care for the scalp and hair; they do not treat medical conditions. If hair loss is sudden, patchy or lasts more than a few weeks, see a dermatologist or trichologist.

FAQ

Questions

Why does my hair feel like straw after the sea?

Sea water dries on the hair and draws moisture out of it, while UV light and chlorine damage the cuticle and its protective lipids. The cuticle lifts, so hair feels rough, tangles and loses its shine.

Should I wash my hair after every swim?

Rinse with fresh water after every swim. Shampoo once a day, or when sunscreen and oil build up, and use conditioner every time you shampoo.

Can I colour my hair after the sea?

Usually yes, but tell the colourist how much sun and sea your hair has had. Very dry, porous hair may need a hydration treatment first, and fresh colour is best kept out of the sea for 48–72 hours.

How much is a hair treatment at ERA in Bang Tao?

Deep Hydration & Nutrition and Care For Curly Hair cost ฿1,000 each and take about 30 minutes. For Kydra rituals, ask the curator about current options.

Can salon care stop hair loss?

Salon rituals are cosmetic care for the hair and scalp, not medical treatment. If hair loss is sudden or lasts more than a few weeks, see a dermatologist or trichologist.
