Royal shave in Phuket: how a hot-towel straight-razor shave works, step by step
A royal shave is a blade-only straight-razor shave after hot-towel steaming. The steps, who it suits, skin care in the heat and ERA prices from ฿1,500.
A royal shave is a classic, blade-only shave: the skin is steamed with hot towels and carefully prepared, the beard is removed with a straight razor, and the skin is calmed with care products at the end. It gives the closest, smoothest result a shave can, and it is as much a ritual of rest as a grooming service. At ERA in Bang Tao, a royal shave takes about 40 minutes and costs ฿1,500.
What a royal shave is — and how it differs from shaving at home
The name sounds grand, but the idea is simple: an experienced barber, one sharp blade and enough time to do it properly.
- Blade only. No clippers, no foil shavers, no cartridges — a single straight-edge blade guided by the barber’s hand, close to the skin and along every contour.
- Preparation is half the result. Hot towels soften the beard and the skin, so the blade glides with less pull and the skin is less irritated.
- Angles you can’t see. The jawline, the area under the chin and the neck, where hair often grows in several directions, are exactly where home shaving goes wrong. The barber sees them and adjusts the angle of the blade.
- Time. A cartridge razor at home takes three minutes. A royal shave takes forty, and that difference is the whole point.
“Hot towel shave” and “royal shave” are often used for the same thing; “royal” usually signals the full ritual rather than a quick tidy-up with a hot towel.
Step by step: how a royal shave works
- Skin check and plan. The barber looks at your skin — irritation, ingrown hairs, sunburn, small cuts — and agrees the result with you: a completely clean face or a clean shave around a moustache.
- Steaming. Hot towels are wrapped around the face for a few minutes. They soften the beard and relax the facial muscles — for many men, the most relaxing part of the ritual.
- Preparation. Professional pre-shave products and a rich lather protect the skin and lift the hairs.
- The blade shave. The first pass follows the direction of hair growth while the barber holds the skin taut. A second pass, across the grain, follows only if your skin allows it, with fresh lather in between.
- Care. A cool towel or cool water calms the skin, followed by soothing after-shave care that keeps it comfortable in the heat.
Instruments at ERA are fully sterilised before every guest. A Russian-speaking curator works on the floor, so you can explain your skin’s quirks in Russian or English and be sure they reach the barber.
Who a royal shave suits — and when to wait
A royal shave is a good choice if you:
- want a perfectly clean face for a wedding, an event, a business meeting or a photo shoot;
- shave every day at home and want a proper reset;
- have a dense beard and are tired of rushed shaves;
- want forty minutes of genuine rest in the middle of a busy trip;
- would like to try the classic barbershop experience for the first time.
Postpone it if you have sunburn on the face or neck, active breakouts, a rash, fresh cuts or very irritated skin. If you are prone to razor bumps and ingrown hairs, or use strong skincare actives, tell the barber first — sometimes a beard trim with a clean contour is the smarter choice for your skin.
Skin care after a shave in a hot, humid climate
Freshly shaved skin is smooth, but for a few hours it is also more sensitive. In Phuket, that matters.
- Give it a few hours before the beach. Salt water, chlorine and strong sun can sting freshly shaved skin. On beach days, book a late-afternoon or evening shave — ERA is open until 21:00.
- Next morning: light moisturiser and SPF. Gel textures sit better in humidity than heavy creams, and sunscreen is non-negotiable under the Phuket sun.
- Hands off. Don’t touch or scratch the shaved area, and rinse sweat off with cool water rather than rubbing it.
- Between shaves. Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week keeps the skin smooth for the next shave.
- If redness or bumps last for days, see a dermatologist.
The heat changes how men’s skin behaves in general: more shine, more visible pores, breakouts you never had at home. That is what the London Grooming “Deep Reset” men’s facial is for — a 30-minute multi-step ritual of deep cleansing and care.
Combining a shave with a beard trim, haircut or facial
A shave fits easily into one visit with other services. Here is how time and price add up at ERA:
| Service at ERA | Time | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Royal shave | ~40 min | ฿1,500 |
| Beard trimming | ~45 min | ฿700 |
| Men’s haircut | ~60 min | ฿1,000–2,000, by master level |
| Premium haircut with five-step hair and scalp care | ~75 min | ฿1,500–2,500, by master level |
| London Grooming “Deep Reset” facial | ~30 min | ฿1,500 |
| Beard camouflage | ~30 min | ฿600–1,000, by master level |
Combinations that work well:
- Haircut + royal shave — about 1 hour 40 minutes, from ฿2,500. A complete reset before an event.
- Premium haircut + royal shave — about 1 hour 55 minutes, from ฿3,000, with scalp care included.
- Royal shave + “Deep Reset” facial — about 70 minutes, ฿3,000. The barber will suggest the best order of procedures for your skin.
- Keeping your beard? A royal shave removes everything. If the beard stays, book beard trimming instead: the barber reduces bulk, aligns the shape and defines a clean contour on the cheeks and neck.
Haircut prices depend on the master level you choose when booking; details are on the men’s haircut page.
